Describes the impact of electronics on the automobile industry in the USA and research in Europe on multiplexing problems. Shows that, besides the problems of operation and control of the motor, pollution problems have given rise to research into ignition simulators with the result that ignition features can be changed and programmed to the specific requirements of the specialised car manufacturers. A detailed description is given of the ignition simulator. Its structure and operation are illustrated by diagrams. The digital ignition system is also described and illustrated.
