Recently there occurred repeatedly operation failures of Diesel-generators operating on ships which took the form of revolution oscillations caused by electromagnetic self-excitation phenomena. Such self-excitation phenomena were analysed up to now only in operation of rigid grids while in the cases considered they appeared in a system consisting of only three. The swinging observed in certain ranges of the load was so strong that it made an ordinary parallel operation quite impossible and could be suppressed only by the use of additional damping windings. Two phenomena leading to such effects are analysed, namely an electromagnetic torsion spring rigidness and its amplification influenced, usually, by a damping winding. These two phenomena, recognised only experimentally at first, are subjected in the presented paper for the first time to a detailed theoretical analysis.
