A practicable re-chargeable battery suitable for urban small cars and delivery vans is shown to require a yield of 100 Wh/kg (of 35 Wh/kg for a lead-acid battery). The CGE research laboratories have developed an air-zinc battery giving this yield or more in which the difficulties of solubility of the zinc electrode and re-deposition during re-charge, leading to short-circuiting. Catalyst deterioration and carbonation of the electrolyte are overcome by circulation of all materials (the zinc in powder form) and regeneration external to the cell.
