Several Associative Array Processors (AAPs) have been built and advertised and a number of articles have been written describing methods of implementing various algorithms on them. They have been touted as having unlimited power and applicability in such diverse problem areas as: Signal Processing, Text Processing, Photo Interpretation, Air Traffic Control, Weather Forecasting, Signature Analysis, Missile Tracking. This leads to the conclusion that the AAP's promoters consider them the ultimate computer design, a panacea of sorts. The paper shows that they are not suitable for use as general purpose computer systems but that they probably have a niche for which they are best suited.
