Human and ergonometric factors in ground air traffic control systems are discussed, with special reference to the SARP-II system. Classifications of different man/machine systems are considered, and illustrated by block diagrams. The optimisation of the work load on the controller is considered and encompasses factors such as information stream received, mental capacity, layout of instruments on the console, climatic conditions and the illumination of working surfaces. Emotional and psycho-social problems are also reviewed.
