The effects of impressed sinusoidal motion and target modulation were studied through the comparative application of resolving power and visual image-evaluation techniques. Analyses variance of the two data sets yielded very similar results, and the two image assessment methods were found to be highly correlated (r = 0.95) with each other. Since the visual image-evaluation method does not require the exploitation of contrived target patterns, the results support its employment as a simple procedure for estimating the limiting resolution of a photographic mapping or reconnaissance system. One such operational application is in developing nominal system-performance standards such as are required under the Air Force quality assurance program.
