Since power requirements for future applications are projected to increase, a study was initiated for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration under contract NAS7-918 to develop a high rate Li/SOCl2 D cell capable of safely delivering 300 Wh kg-1 at the C/2 rate. The cell should also deliver a minimum capacity of 10 Ah at this rate. Initial studies of the discharge of SOCl2 cells showed that the operating capabilities of these cells, particularly at high rates, are limited by the carbon cathodes. This was confirmed in part by Dey and Bro, who found that cathode utilization was found to decrease with increasing discharge rate. This decrease in cathode efficiency may be due to blocking of the carbon pores, thereby reducing the cathode's ability to accommodate the solid discharge products. Research was undertaken to improve the cathode performance particularly at high rates. Four carbon blacks were evaluated as cathode materials in Li/SOCl2 cells. The purpose of this study was to compare the physical characteristics of the raw carbon cathodes to their discharge performance at high rates. The data suggests that Ketjenblack EC may be a good substitute for the standard.
