This paper introduces the concept of satellite navigation and highlights some of the key work done in the evolution of the technology. Contemporary designs which have been or are being developed through flight implementations are discussed and their performance capabilities summarized. Fully autonomous systems are assessed as having capabilities in the range of a few kilometers while the GPS (Global Positioning System) which is partially autonomous can attain accuracies of tens of meters or better. Programs such as the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) which are considered the current drivers to future navigation needs are also discussed to project activities which should motivate advancement of the state of this art in the near term time frame. Throughout the discussions and descriptions, references from the open literature are cited as aids to those interested in detailed research and to acknowledge previous contributions to this important field.
