This paper examines the nature of command and control automation requirements with respect to the opportunities presented by Artificial Intelligence, and more particularly by Expert Systems. Key needs are identified in the contextual aggregation and disaggregation of information as required at different levels in an command hierarchy, and in the handling of data of varying timeliness, quality and pertinence. Translation of the algorithms from their experimental or prototype forms into operational versions without loss of flexibility and with acceptable performance is seen as a major problem area.
