Military space missions of the twenty-first century will require tens to hundreds of kilowatts of steady-state power and fractions of a megawatt to hundreds of megawatts of peak/pulsed power for applications such as Jam-Free Communications, Advanced Surveillance, Electronic Warfare and Electric Propulsion Orbit Transfer. Meeting these revolutionary mission needs requires the development of high performance, reliable and survivable power systems. This paper addresses power system requirements, describes some of the high power technology development issues and summarizes high-merit system, subsystem and component technologies that 'could make a difference' in fulfilling revolutionary mission needs.
