Typical missions will encompass a range of power requirements from tens of kilowatts to hundreds of kilowatts. Among potential space missions requiring large amounts of electricity are SDI missions, advanced direct broadcast and air traffic control satellites and electric propulsion systems. Studies have shown that a system employing a nuclear reactor heat source coupled with thermoelectric energy conversion can best meet these mission power levels and can be available by the early 1990's. This paper will briefly review typical mission requirements that have been established for the SP-100 program and then provide a description of a conceptual design developed by the General Electric Company to meet these requirements. Major operational considerations and interface considerations will then be reviewed.
