Present day helicopters have exceptional capabilities, performing hundreds of different kinds of transports including industrial and media tasks. Unfortunately, they do all of these things only in good visibility. When weather is bad, at best they fly only from airport to airport. In order to reach their full potential, helicopters ned to be able to operate in severe IFR conditions independent of existing guidance systems. A substantial number of helicopters is dedicated to the logistic support of the offshore oil industry, hospitals, and the search mission for police. These and other helicopters used in the military environment have to accomplish their missions under adverse conditions most of the time. Some missions have to be carried out at night and/or with very low level nap-of-the-earth flight in dense forests. Pilot workload without proper avionics and mission equipment packages under these kinds of conditions becomes very heavy.
