A personal computer based system for identifying, tracking and sorting airline baggage at Newark International Airport is described. The system uses sophisticated omnidirectional bar code readers to read a bar coded tag attached to each bag by the ticket agent, and an IBM PC which tracks the bag's movement on the conveyor belts and controls the mechanisms that direct the bag to the correct aircraft. A major problem is the limited number of serial I/O channels, which must be circumvented by multiplexers.
