Real-time distributed data processing systems continue to present challenges in such areas as system architecture analysis, fault tolerance and performance evaluation. This is complicated further by adding flexibility to the hardware architecture of a real-time system design, requiring the system to operate stand-alone, with various special purpose devices and interfaces, or even with connections to other computer networks for the purposes of data exchange, system testing and performance assessment. This paper describes an automated sensor signal processing system called RTSS (Real-Time Sensor System). RTSS is a ballistic missile defense application that is faced with the above challenges. This paper describes the RTSS real-time system design approach and discusses design engineering and analyses for the systems architecture definitions.
