Although Ada, the DoD's standard language for embedded systems, was designed for real-time functions, its generality and flexibility make it quite suitable for scientific/analytical applications. In fact, many of the features that favor Ada for embedded systems are also desirable for scientific/analytical programs. For example, Ada's reusability and programming-in-the-large features lend themselves extremely well to analytical programs of the type that are needed to support the development of embedded systems. Hence, it is not surprising to encounter the requirement for the use of Ada in the simulation/analysis/support programs to be employed in the development of the new advanced military aircraft. There are of course other advantages unrelated to Ada for using it, such as increasing the Ada talent pool and justifying the development of more Ada oriented tools; however, on a technical basis, the reasons are quite compelling and worthy of examination.
