A high speed electrodynamic (EDS) Maglev system has been proposed as a future transportation alternative for the 600 km Toronto-Ottawa-Montreal traffic corridor. Research and development of this advanced guided ground mode has been active in Canada since the early 1970's under the sponsorship and co-ordination of the Transportation Development Centre of Transport Canada. The system design has evolved through contributions from an interdisciplinary team of researchers drawn from several Canadian universities (Queen's, Toronto and McGill), from government laboratories (National Research Council), and from industry (CTF Systems Inc.). A recent overview summarizes the objectives and achievements of the program. In this paper, analyses and designs have been presented for levitation and LSM magnets for the Canadian EDS Maglev Vehicle. Progress has also been reported on the development of a magnet fabrication technology suitable for the EDS Maglev application. The results from the first of a series of superconducting coils are promising. In the near future, the solenoid technology will be extended toward fabrication of a coil of racetrack geometry and dimensions similar to the current levitation coil design.
