The use of GTO's combined with oil cooling and energy recovery has made it possible to meet the rating specification of a 1 MW converter within te relatively small space available. Tests are not complete, but initial results are encouraging and the design proposed appears to offer great potential for future applications. This paper describes the development of a high power GTO inverter to meet a specification so severe that a conventional thyristor version was impracticable. The performance requirements of the locomotive drive are discussed, and it is shown that the problem of losses favours the use of GTO's. A method of recovering energy from the snubber circuits is described, and the attendant advantages of the system outlined. The inverter is still under test, but the paper closes by summarising expected benefits of the overall design and gives some initial test results.
