this paper describes the approach being taken to incorporate Human Factors (HF) guidance information with a User System Interface (USI) rapid prototyping tool. The host prototyping tool is the Rapid Intelligent Prototyping Laboratory (RIPL). The HF/USI information database used was based upon the Smith and Mosier (1984) USI Design Guidelines. This HF guidance information is made available to USI designers via three separate mechanisms: an on-line indexed reference library of the Guidelines themselves, a computer-based dialogue evaluation system which assesses the conformity of a proposed dialogue to selected USI design parameters, and an AI expert system via which a user can obtain consultation advice on a specific aspect of USI design. The availability and accessibility of this HF guidance information within the context of a prototyping tool is expected to facilitate the process of effective USI design.
