This paper describes a small, light-weight, low-cost, battery-operated, hand-held training aid that presents instruction to supplement classroom training in various technical specialities. Courseware for the specific technical specialties is contained in interchangeable plug-in cartridges and in accompanying booklets that are mounted just above the unit's display screen. Synthesized voice, special audiovisual effects, and instructional routines that include gaming features are employed to provide intrinsic motivation and enhance the effectiveness of training.
