Recent development work has produced the switched reluctance (SR) motor as a possible alternative to the induction motor as a commutatorless drive for traction vehicles. This articel describes the principal features of this type of motor in the context of traction service. GEC Traction has applied the SR motor, for evaluation purposes, to a Blackpool tramcar, using four industrial drives, electrically modified and re-packaged for traction use. The tram has run successfully in service, demonstrating the technical viability of SR motors in traction, although further development is required before large scale use can occur.
