An investigation of the steady state operating characteristics of a cascaded doubly fed machine (CDFM) system used for aircraft electric power generation is described in this report. The areas of investigation include the effect of unbalanced load, the effect of excitation system harmonics, and the efficiency of the generator. The effect of load unbalance on the output phase voltages is described, and the influence of unbalanced currents on exciter performance is investigated. It is shown that exciter harmonics will exciter responces between th machine inductance and capacitors at the generator termimals. The nature of these resonances are examined. A study of efficiency of the two machine system was conducted. The study shows that, with careful VAR management, a high efficiency system can be constructed. It is shown that VAR compensation is required at the generator output terminals and machines with relatively large magnetizing inductances are necessary.
