The reasons for the continued popularity of chopper control of d.c. traction motors are reviewed. The influence of the GTO thyristor on chopper design is then discussed, with particular reference to its voltage rating and cooling and equipment layout requirements. The simplicity and reduction in size that has resulted from the use of GTOs has encouraged the application of 'four-quadrant' choppers, in which the load current and voltage can be independently reversed by purely solid-state means.
