Since its introduction on warships, the use of electricity has steadily increased until now virtually all ship services are electrically powered. One of the major roles for surface warships is anti-submarine warfare and this requires ships which produce little background noise. To meet this requirement the Royal Navy's latest frigate, the Type 23, is being fitted with Combined Diesel Electric and Gas Turbine (CODLAG) propulsion, where the diesel electric drive gives quiet running at passive sonar listening speeds. Generation, supply and distribution systems for ships with and without electric propulsion are discussed with reference to the special requirements of naval vessels and possible future developments.
