The Air Force needs low cost, effective training devices to improve the readiness and proficiency of aircrews. The goal implicit in the search for advanced low cost training media is the capability to train as much of the task as possible using least cost systems. This capability decreases the use of expensive devices such as flight simulators by using various part task trainers for many of the basic procedural and cognitive aspects of aircrew tasks. Various inexpensive technologies (e.g., microcomputers) have the potential to satisfy part task training requirements. However, the real issue is not device design, but selection of effective training methodology. The Air Force needs guidance, based on an empirical and theoretical foundation, to design part task training systems.
