Current development of a Pilot's Associate (a system which will integrate artificial intelligence and other technologies to aid the pilot in combat) has surfaced many new challenges in crewstation design. This system and other integrated avionics capabilities will not only present higher order information to the pilot, but will directly aid the pilot in making decisions affecting the accomplishment of the mission. The success of the Pilot's Associate will depend on effective communication between the pilot and the system. One critical aspect of this communication channel will be an advanced voice interface. The development of an advanced and effective communications system will rely heavily on merging natural language with state-of-the-art speech recognition systems. This paper discusses the need for a systems approach for specifying future applications of voice for future fighter aircraft.
