Development work in the Federal Republic of Germany in the field of electromagnetic levitation technology is based on noncontacting electromagnetic suspension and guidance in conjunction with various types of propulsion. Apart from asynchronous and synchronous shortstator drive systems, special attention has been given to the application of a synchronous long-stator drive with iron core. Apart from developing new technical solutions for the mechanical structure of the vehicle the magnetic power supply and the magnet air gap control systems, the magnets have to be designed as a link between the fixed reaction rail and the vehicle as regards static and dynamic characteristics. Within these terms of reference, a system of magnets has been developed which is marked by its low weight at the same time as high support force, great reliability and a high speed of force variation. The design criteria and practical measured results are explained.
