During their operational life in geostationary orbit, two satellites, MARECS-A and ECS-1, experienced partial loss of power after some 1.5 years on station. In-orbit tests identified the failure to be a short to the panel structure at several sections ofthe solar array. Analyses and tests were performed to identify the possible failure cause, find corrective actions for the other satellites still to be launched (MARECS-B2, ECS-2, 3, 4, 5) and generate recommendations for future projects. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the anomalies observed and to provide the relevant design descriptions and details of the corresponding investigation programme so that this information can be used as a case study for future projects operating under similar conditions.
