This paper describes a unique method and IC design to control the retractable headlamp motors in the automotive environment. The IC is fabricated using a 17 volt linear I2L process and packaged in a 16 pin DIP. The IC controls the gate drive to two power FET's for stall sensing, speed control, delay control, maximum drive time and over voltage shutdown. The stall sensing inputs are designed to withstand load dump transients. The new IC and motor control system addresses these two problems, what follows is a chronological description of IC and system performance from input stimulation to timed shutdown. The new control system uses the counter EMF generated by the motor as a control signal for both the stall sensing and motor speed control functions. The duty cycle of the motor drive pulse is modulated under high voltage conditions in order to maintain speed control. Lastly, as the headlight and/or linkages reach their mechanical stop a stall condition is sensed and further drive pulses to the motors are interrupted. An exclusive OR input allows the system designer to use either a break-before-make or a make-before-break activation switch. The input pins are protected against positive transients by an external resistor and against negative transients by an Epi-Substrate diode.
