Fuels used in aircraft jet engines also serve as coolants in heat exchangers. As they circulate past hot aluminum or stainless steel surfaces, they deposit decomposition products which, if allowed to accumulate, seriously reduce both heat transfer and flow rate at a given pressure drop. The deposit problem is aggravated by the presence of dissolved oxygen, a high aromatic content and the small amounts of nitrogen and sulfur compounds which are most prominent in fuels derived from shale oil.
