The Navy has taken the position within the last year that N-ROSS is to be a continuing series of single oceanographic satellites. The design/sensor suite to be carried by N-ROSS 2 will be decided by Navy during the next five year planning drill (POM-88, commencing October 1985). The starting position is that N-ROSS 2 will be a copy of N-ROSS 1, although certain enhancement such as a synthetic aperture radar, a multi-beam-multi-frequency altimeter, and other sensor systems will be reviewed with regard to concept of operations, technical risk and cost. I think synergism is the key to doing oceanography from space. One most ensure that the proper combination of sensors are flown together. To design for the future we must keep in mind the advancement in the physics and accuracy of our oceanographic analysis and forecasting models (which drive data requirements), and the significant reduction in size and simultaneous increase in computational capability of small computers (which may make satellite on board processing a reality).
