The design of a variable frequency induction motor drive for use in thrusters for tethered submersibles is presented. The drive controls a 1.5 horsepower induction motor at frequencies up to 400 Hz. The inverter in the drive uses power MOSFETs which results in a very compact and simple circuit. The drive controller, based on a microcomputer and a LSI PWM waveform generator, offers the flexibility required to adapt the drive to different submersibles.
