The demand for more efficient solar power conversion devices for space applications is rising. Attention has been turning toward heat engine/generator type systems in an effort to reduce mass, aperture area, and low earth orbit (LEO) aerodynamic drag. The latest collector designs are aimed at providing the space station with over 80kWe of continuous power in LEO with a thermodynamic heat engine for solar-to-electric conversion. This system would require four concentrator units with a capability for future expansion as system needs grow. This paper presents a design approach for a large solar collector for space dynamic engine application that provides point-focus concentration using a novel arrangement of parabolic trough mirrors. The design has a cost-effective fabrication approach, is fully deployable, and has minimal operational risks.
