The Space Transportation System shuttle orbiter as a launch vehicle for satellites presents specific problems for users. The shuttle, with its onboard crew and vast array of electronics, offers the capability to test and perform a health assessment check of the satellite prior to ejection into low earth orbit, which assures that the satellite has survived the launch environment and is ready for deployment. The orbiter provides power for payload operation and heater control in addition to equipment required to command the payload into desired operational modes and telemetry downlink capability. The International Telecommunications Satellite organization (INTELSAT) spacecraft, being designed by Hughes Aircraft Company and a team of international subcontractors, uses most of the standard services offered by the STS. INTELSAT is a nonprofit cooperative of 109 countries that owns and operates the global communications satellite system used by countries around the world for international communications and by more than 25 countries for domestic communications.
