The lidar applied from low flying aircraft over ocean has a potential for the depth resolved measurement of hydrographic parameters as the light attenuation coefficient and the concentration of water constituents (chlorophyll a, Gelbstoff, suspended minerals) in the upper water layer. This requires an excitation of fluorescence and scattering processes by laser pulses in the nanosecond range and a time resolved detection of the excited signals at time intervals small compared to the signal duration. Depth profiles can be derived by appropriate algorithms from lidar signals measured at detection wavelengths which corresponds to the scattering and fluorescence bonds of the substances under investigation.
