Sodium/beta'-alumina/sulfur-selenium secondary batteries may have substantial advantages over their counterparts with pure sulfur cathodes for certain applications as a result of the higher and wider range of operating temperatures. Possible advantages include: greater depth of discharge, higher energy and power densities, and reduced thermal management requirements. Experiments have been conducted to evaluate the feasibility of cells with mixed sulfur-selenium catholyte systems. Small cells were fabricated with starting catholyte compositions between 50 % (mole) selenium and 50 % sulfur to 90 % selenium and 10 % sulfur and the open circuit voltages of the cells were measured as functions of temperature and depth of discharge. Based on the results of these experiments, cells with optimum catholyte composition and useable capacities of 18 amp-hrs were fabricated and tested under cyclic chage/discharge conditions at 400 to 425 Cel. Charge utilization of 77.7 % was attained with an internal resistance of 12.73 milliohms.
