Energy Research Corporation (ERC) has been adapting its non-sintered, plastic-bonded electrode technology to very large nickel-cadmium cells which has culminated in the development of an 8000 Ah cell. The new ERC cell has almost twice the storage capacity (at 46-48 Wh/kg) and 30-50 % improvement in volumetric density (at 100 Wh/l) over lead acid cells. The cell which is designed to meet high discharge rates and rapid charge acceptance, with a life expectancy of over 750 cycles will provide both diesel-electric and nuclear powered submarines with improved performance.
