As the Space Transportation System (space shuttle) becomes a more widely used launch vehicle, interface issues are becoming more apparent. Satellites that must remain powered in the shuttle bay for extended lengths of time pose special electrical interface problems. The spacecraft cradle, which serves as the mechanical interface between the spacecraft and the STS during launch, also carries a number of airborne support equipment (ASE) units that control the STS-spacecraft electrical interface. Electrical power is extracted from the shuttle at two separate points and either conditioned or switched, depending on requirements of the spacecraft units to which it is routed. A good interface maintains the health of the satellite batteries, solar panel, power electronics units, and loads throughout the launch sequence.
