The bus operator who provides a scheduled service in a metropolitan environment, unlike his railway competitor, has no direct influence in the major factor which influences the quality of his product, namely the infrastructure (roads, traffic lights, etc). Inevitably therefore, the engineering contribution to the bus industry has been pre-occupied with the vehicle. It has been left to the operator to take the initiative in the adopting of systems which assist the service. The objective of this paper is to record the evolution of electronic systems and equipment associated with London Buses and to identify the demands currently being made for systems to assist all aspects of service and vehicle operation. In doing so, the paper seeks to stimulate a more comprehensive contribution from the engineering sector of industry.
