Direction finding is only one part of radio surveillance or reconnaissance. Its objective is to determine the azimuthal angle of incidence of an electromagnetic wave (LOB: line of bearing) and in consequence to spot the site of the transmitter involved. From this point of view it is mere technical challenge. The requirements of potential users of such equipment will, of course, be totally different. Emissions may be entirely unintended as for instance EMI's from defective equipment as diathermal medical equipment, worn out ground connections or filtering equipment of authorized participants (radio amateurs, authorities, CB-equipment) and quite frequently 'forgotten' transmitters in communication equipment (public transport, police, airports) where malfunctioning of a microphone switch however the transmitter on thus blocking one communication channel. As experience shows, also illegaly intended emissions by agents, terrorists or demonstrators have to be considered. Particular tactical or strategical aspects are left to the imagination of the reader. Illegal transmissions to be detected in the VHF/UHF range are according to certain experiences concentrated in the CB-Bands (27 MHz), FM broadcasting bands (85 to 105 MHz), around the amateur band (145 MHz) and between 450-470 MHz.
