A combined radio and dead-reckoning vehicle tracking system is described in which an automatic Decca Navigator receiver is supplemented by a simple, low-cost odometer and gymballed magnetic compass. The three independent sets of data are combined, using adaptive Kalman filter techniques, so that the radio data are smoothed and the cumulative errors of the dead-reckoning system are largely removed. The radio data are also used to calibrate the compass and odometer, minimising cost and maximising accuracy, and a novel technique is employed to reduce compass tilt errors due to acceleration. In the experimental integrated navigation system described, data are recorded on-board the vehicle but processed off-line. Vehicle tracking records are presented which show reliable operation with errors of less than 70 m standard deviation over long routes in both urban and rural areas.
