This paper describes the development of driver information systems in Audi cars during the last few years. A short review is given starting with mechanical dashboards equipped with separate modules consisting of speedometer, tacho, etc. In July 1982, an on-board check system was introduced in the Audi 100 (5000 S). This system indicates the warning information by displaying a symbol on a projection screen. In autumn 1982 the first electronic instrument panel was introduced combined with an on-board check system with speech synthesis. In spring 1983 a 'hybrid' instrument cluster was introduced in the Audi 200/5000 turbo, i.e., a mechanical instrument panel with an integrated electronic Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) for instantaneous fuel consumption or boost pressure indication. As an option a trip-computer in a separate module situated on the right-hand side of the instrument cluster is offered. Functions, as well as hardware, are described here (e.g., the selection of the different country versions). It should be mentioned that the trip-computer hardware consists of a two-processor system - a Motorola 6805 R2 with a four-channel A/D converter and a 6805 F2 CMOS microcomputer for calculating the time and storage of trip values during ignition off. In autumn 1983 a different trip-computer was introduced in the Audi 100/5000 S as an option. The display (LDC) as well as the electronics, are integrated in the mechanical instrument cluster. An NEC 7508 one-chip CMOS microcomputer with a separate A/D converter is used. The last part of this paper is a comparison of the above mentioned hardware requirements with the question of how many ROM, RAM, I/O, A/D channels, interrupt, and other features a microcomputer used in driver information systems should have. One example for this could be a microcomputer with an integrated 'watchdog'.
