This paper has described the modelling and control of a prototype vehicle for magnetic levitation and traction. The design of a variable structure control system and its comparison with a fixed gain control system has shown that the variable structure system has much better interaction rejection characteristics. The variable structure control system has also shown much better parameter uncertainty responses than the fixed gain system. A prototype vehicle exists at Bath and some experiments have been performed to measure the dynamic response of the system for fixed gain control systems. Variable Structure Control systems are under development at the present time, but more work is required to establish how well the algorithms work under more realistic conditions on the prototype compared to the fixed gain system. This will be reported in due course in the literature. The rig realisation has, however, confirmed the model developed in this paper as adequate and confirmed the fixed gain design. The rig in its present state will not confirm the responses to changes in mass and inertia although some work is in progress to manipulate the c.g. position.
