The Delta Transfer Stage (DTS) has evolved by repackaging the reliable Delta second stage, with hardware modifications as needed to meet both STS safety requirements and extended mission durations required by a combined perigee/apogee stage. In this way, the DTS carries on the mission success history of the Delta second stage, which has had no failures on the last 75 Delta launches. MDAC has now been funded by AIC to develop the DTS as a commercial venture. The stage has been designed to deliver a 7500 pound payload to geosynchronous orbit. It also is well suited to other orbits and missions including NASA interplanetary missions. The development program is planned such taht the first flight of the DTS can take place early in the calendar year 1987. The DTS provides operational advantages inherent with a storable liquid upper stage, namely high specific impulse, multiple burns, commanded engine cut-off, in orbit storage, and a propellant load that can the varied to match mission requirements.
