This paper examines the tradeoffs involved in using monochrome versus color solid-state television cameras for the detection and recognition of targets in the air-to-ground scenario. The air-to-ground imaging problem is first reviewed, including a discussion of factors to be considered in assessing the impact on system performance when color television is a requirement. A review of solid-state imager, VTR and color TV system principles is included, followed by a description of the monochrome and color cameras selected for evaluation and test. The imagers for these cameras have the same format size, pixel count and array organization. Hence the performance comparisons and test results apply to cameras with essentially equivalent solid-state imager complexity, except for the addition of a filter array on the color imager. The study and test results indicate that high-resolution monochrome cameras can be preferred for applications requiring the detection and recognition of ground-based targets.
