Historically, the IOS has tended to be merely a control device for the simulator. Unsophisticated hardware technology placed severe constraints on the amount of instructional support tools that could be provided. IOS software tended to mimic simulator software by the use of constant polling, highly-compressed CPU-bound code, and synchronous operation. This reduced the number of instructional features that could be implemented in the IOS. Instructor inputs and system evaluation reflect the need for more research, in the area of IOS design. The intent of today's Instructor/Operator Station (IOS) is not only to control the simulation but also to provide instructor support functions and to collect data while reducing the number of non-instructional tasks. The trend is towards making the IOS a more instructor oriented workstation. This trend must be integrated into the software design. This paper examines the elements of design that contribute to making the IOS a useful and effective tool. Particular emphasis has been placed on display and menu formats, data driven software, and user-friendly design concepts.
