The Ada language has been developed by the U.S. Department of Defense to help combat the high cost of software in defense systems. It has become a tri-service as well as an ANSI standard and is starting to be put to use in the DoD and elsewhere. Several related projects support the objectives of the Ada program; among these are the attempts to define the Common APSE Interface Set and the criteria to be used to evaluate and validate APSEs. Each of the services has stated policies for the introduction and use of Ada. Reaction to the Ada language and the Ada program in general is varied, but the DoD anticipates a successful transition from the current expensive, multi-lingual situation to one in which the use of Ada is standard practice.
