This paper presents the results of the application of Software Quality Metrics (SQM) by the author to three separate major military defense systems. The first system, a remotely piloted vehicle, consistent of a complex embedded computer network of twelve processors and fifteen functional software segments. The software included the modification of an existing operating system, flight software, mission support software, simulators and trainers, and diagnostic/maintenance software. The second defense system was a steerable missile built around a highly complex guidance and navigation system. The application included air, ground, and support software. The third system dealt with early detection of air/space vehicles and included a variety of communication, pattern recognition, and display software. All systems were written in different languages, and all had separate and independent Software Quality Assurance (SQA) activities performed. This paper reviews the results of one software development phase and a limited but identical set of quality factors.
