An experiment was conducted in which twenty pilots were asked to perform a fault diagnosis task (detection of a vacuum system failure). A scenario was presented to the pilots indicating the flight conditions under which symptoms of a problem appeared. Following the scenario presentation, pilots were allowed to request additional information in an effort to diagnose the cause of the problem. Pilot performance was modeled in terms of the activation and use of a frame system.
