The current trend toward integrated avionics systems requires distributed processing approaches based on a small set of common modules. This paper describes an architectural concept based on expandable matrices of preprocessor, signal processor, and data processor modules. The paper concludes that such an approach yields significant benefits in terms of increased functional capability, increased aircraft availability, and decreased life cycle and maintenance cost. Effective realization of these benefits will require advanced software approaches and additional standards, such as a high speed bus standard and a signal processor ISA standard.
