This paper presents an optimization-based model for the cost-effective design of maintenance facilities for several hundred types of avionic equipment. The model combines efficient algorithms from pattern recognition, mathematical programming, and network queueing theory to solve a problem that has heretofore defied optimization. Computationally efficient, the model allows sensitivity analysis with respect to various design parameters, and has application in a wide class of production scheduling/resource allocation problems. The model is currently in use in the design of intermediate maintenance facilities for avionic equipment.
